Objective:

  • Design an RFID-based student tracking system for Washington-Lee High School

Statement of the Problem:

  • Arlington Public Schools requires each teacher to take attendance at the beginning of each class period. Teachers have expressed concerns that the current process is time-consuming and inefficient, taking away from instructional time. Your proposal should design a student tracking and attendance system that satisfies the needs of the teachers and administration. Your proposal should also calculate implementation costs as well as explaining the advantages and disadvantages of your system.

Requirements:

  • Every student must have a tag
  • Classroom attendance can be efficiently taken
  • Real-time student locations
    • Floor #
    • Hall #
    • Room #

Implementation costs:

  • tags for every student (plain, card, implants)
  • transponders (RFID readers)
  • computer system?
  • cabling?

Floor plans:

Deliverable:

  • Introduction
  • Design description
    • # of tags, what kind of tags, make, model, cost, etc.
    • # of readers, their locations, make, model, cost, etc.
    • Be sure to include the MARKED floor plans with locations of readers
    • any other information regarding the design
  • Implementation costs:
    • Spreadsheet / table outlining total cost of system
  • System Evaluation / Conclusion
    • Advantages of your system
    • Disadvantages of your system
    • Social and ethical concerns

Presentation:

  • Once you have completed the paper deliverable, you should begin working on a presentation that outlines your system's design.
  • The presentation should be 5-6 minutes long
  • After each presentation, there will be a Question & Answer period of 2-3 minutes

BEST DESIGN AWARD:

  • The best design will be determined using three criteria:
    • Overall cost of implementation, advantages, and disadvantages of the system
    • Design document
    • Presentation
