Technical Definition
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)is a code for representing English characters as numbers, with each letter assigned a number from 0 to 127.The standard ASCII character set uses just 7 bits for each character.[1]
Layman's Definition
The ASCII assigns a number to ever letter.

A computer uses ASCII to represent text from one computer to the other.
