Usability

  • Discuss Jakob Nielsen's 10 Usability Heuristics (rules of thumb / strategies)
  • Pair up, open a text editor on your computer (Applications->, and put both your names at the top
  • For each of the 10 rules, name a program or find a website that does a good job of following that rule.
    • Number and write down the rule
    • Write down the name of the program or website on your paper and explain how it follows that particular rule.
    • Example: 2) Match between system and the real world: Mozilla Firefox's buttons model real life buttons because they go in when you press them and come back out when you let go.
  • For at least 5 of the 10 rules, find websites that break those rules, and explain how the website breaks that rule. If you find a website that breaks multiple rules, then you can use that website multiple times as long as you explain why it breaks those rules.
