  • Is technology benefitting us or is it hurting us?
  • Top three things in mind: 1) Universities charging 500 dollar student fees. 2) Students using emoticons in the school work. 3) GPAs, a whole point lower than non-facebook users
  • Social Ethical Units: People & Machines, Control, Equality of Access
  • Control: People who use computers feel as if power of the internet is at the tip of their finger tips. They have the urge to be on the computer 24/7, whether that be on a desktop pc, laptop, or even a phone. People are now on some type of computer everyday now. Control is absent when using a computer.
  • Downside to Technology:Facebook is an issue, because people who procrastinate on finishing assignments often sign onto their accounts and talk with friends or just stalk other people. This issue causes drops in grades in many students.

Answer the following questions in short answer/essay form:

  • 1.The fact that careers are all but selected for students in India and China also allows them to focus more in particular fields, providing them the opportunity to take classes in that field before they are even out of high school. This drastically contrasts with American high school students who usually do not even think about their careers until they are preparing to apply to colleges and may even change their intended careers halfway through college. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Why?
  • In my opinion, I think that it is fine that we do not have a set goal. Especially one that is set by someone else. This helps students develop a sense of making decisions on their own, without any help from adults. In comparison, the students in China and India might have some issues figuring out what to do once they are on their own. Hypothetically speaking, what if the student from India or China does not succeed with making their goals. What other career would they pursue or look into? It would probably be quite difficult to find a different path to a different career after spending all your life focused on learning how to excel in that set career. On the contrary, Americans have more of a balanced approach at life and can adjust to different type of careers.
  • 2.I think the students chosen to represent Americans were a pretty good depiction of some of the top students we have here. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
  • I agree that the students chosen to represent Americans were good choices. They were not the cliché nerds you would expect them to be. They chose intelligent over achieving students who have healthy social lives.
  • 3.The purpose of viewing the video was to demonstrate a flat world - made flat by competing economies in China and India. And that happened because of the dot.com bubble which laid down the fiber optic cables connecting our country with theirs via the Internet. Now that you've finished viewing the video, what are some of your thoughts? Was it worthwhile to have viewed this video? Has it made you appreciate what you have? How can we say the world is flat and global all at the same time? Don't those images cancel each other out? Explain.
  • Viewing this video helped open my eyes. Seeing other students from different countries taking rigorous classes and exelling at them has bought awarness to me. So yes, it was very wothwhile to have seen this video.

  • BMW Offshoring Article
  • In Germany it is 24 euros per hour and in the U.S. it is 15 dollars per hour.
  • I am not surprised, because they offshored to a place that is in need of jobs. Therefore a lower pay would be suitable to the area because of their need to work.
  • Well, the only reason I can think of is that, countries that offshore to America are targeting areas of lower cost of living. (perhaps the south) By doing this they are able to actually give out lower pay for Americans. This helps them by saving money yet still having the same production rate.

  • If we have the option to be Put on the "don't call list" shouldn't we also have the option to not be tracked?
  • As you may know, we are able to be put on the "do not call list" with request with telemarketers. Well, the FTC have proposed an idea to have an option where you could actually decide wether or not you would like to be tracked.
