Internet protocols are the communications protocols that provide the packet-switching technology that runs the internet. In layman's terms they are the technology that lets data be transfered over the internet. Internet protocols are used whenever any data is transfered online. An example of an internet protocol is the FTP protocol which allows direct transfer of files over the internet.
