Computer hardware assignment

Objective:

  • You will learn the different parts of a personal computer
  • You will learn to find computer parts online
  • You will compare and contrast pricing of building your own PC vs. buying one prebuilt

Procedures:

  1. Go to a computer retailer's website (e.g. Dell, HP, Sony, Apple, etc.)
  2. Find a desktop computer that you would be interested in purchasing
  3. Look for the computer's "technical specifications"
  4. Bookmark or save the link
  5. Open a Google Spreadsheet document
  6. Name the spreadsheet Computer Hardware Assignment
  7. Paste the link to the computer that you found in the Google spreadsheet
  8. Create 3 different headers: Computer Part, Make/Model, Cost
  9. Paste the following into the Computer Part column of your spreadsheet:
    • Motherboard
    • CPU
    • RAM (memory)
    • Hard drive
    • Video/graphics card
    • CD/DVD burner
    • Case
    • Power supply
    • Monitor
    • Keyboard
    • Mouse
  10. Using Newegg, find the components of your pre-built machine
    • Make sure that your components "match" up with the motherboard
  11. For each part, copy and paste the following into your document:
    • The full name of the part (including make and model)
    • The cost
  12. After you have "purchased" all the parts, at the bottom of the spreadsheet, show the total cost of your machine
  13. What was the cost of the original computer? Show the difference in Excel
  14. Copy and paste the entire spreadsheet to your blog
