Control is the authority or command over IT

The amount of control can be defined through the balance between freedom and security. For example, when you are at school, school computers do not allow you to download to the C drive. The reason that the school does this is because of security. The end result is that the school is limiting the amount of freedom that they allow you to have on their computers in exchange for more security.

Another example of control can be seen when pubic schools and libraries are required to follow internet use policies. These policies include prohibiting the transmitting or viewing illegal material on the Internet, preventing access by students to materials the schools determine as harmful, and selecting technology to filter or block child pornography and obscenity.<ref>http://www.ncsl.org/programs/lis/cip/filterlaws.htm</ref>This enforced when the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was passed on January 2001.<ref> http://www.fcps.edu/DIT/InternetFiltering/publicfaq.htm#Legal?</ref>

SynchronEyes is another example of control. SynchronEyes is a program that helps computers be monitored. It has the ability to monitor all of the computers connected to it, control online access, launch applications, lock computers, transfer files, and turn off all computers. SynchronEyes creates an almost 'big brother is watching you' effect and embodies a strong sense of power for whoever is in control of the program. <ref>http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/SynchronEyes+Classroom+Management+Software/Features.htm</ref>

The FCC is an independent government agency that is in charge with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia and all US possessions.<ref>http://www.fcc.gov/aboutus.html</ref>The commissions report straight to Congress and is composed of seven different commissioners appointed by the president.<ref>http://www.answers.com/topic/federal-communications-commission</ref> The FCC is highly criticized for controlling too much of the media and as a threat to free speech because of its control.<ref>http://techliberation.com/2007/08/22/theres-criticism-of-the-fcc-and-then-theres-criticism-of-the-fcc/</ref><ref>http://articles.latimes.com/2007/dec/10/business/fi-fcc10</ref>
